Course Overview
This is a longitudinal monthly program zoom conference. This program intended for faculty who have an oversight role in the area of graduate medical education regarding trainee well-being and are seeking the skills and knowledge to enhance new or existing GME well-being initiatives with a particular focus on the impact of COVID-19 and recent attention to the impact of racism. This interactive, skills-based program places special attention on the development of comprehensive GME well-being programs that meet the ACGME Section VI Common Program Requirements on Well-Being and address issues related to anti-racism and the pandemic. The course is intended to equip all participants with an action plan for next steps by the program's conclusion and will include sufficiently new content to benefit course participants from last year.

Objectives
  • Understand the components of fraught conversations in graduate medical education.
  • Analyze how the conversations in a time of public health turmoil and racial injustice are different from those we were having two years ago.
  • Acquire skills to navigate, lead, and role model exemplary practices that enhance and restore common purpose to challenging conversations (not just prevent something worse from happening).

  1. Define “Challenging Conversations” in medicine.
  2. Explore the paradox of pursuing well-being in the context of conflict.
  3. Review techniques for creating inclusive, respectful professional conversations as the seeds for individual growth and institutional progress.
  4. Apply these techniques to a scenario where the stakes are high, the emotions are strong, and there is discord.

Accreditation
