Course Overview
Over the past two decades, the US suicide rate has steadily increased despite expanded efforts to reverse this trend via destigmatization campaigns, implementation of suicidal ideation screening, and encouraging referrals to mental health treatment. To the confusion and frustration of researchers, clinicians, family members, and many others, these efforts have not reversed the trend of rising suicide rates. This presentation considers several explanations and proposes alternative perspectives to guide suicide prevention efforts.

Objectives
  1. Understand the relationship between mental health conditions and suicide
  2. Describe the multiple pathways model of suicide
  3. Identify the five levels of the prevention through design model
