Course Overview

This two-day in person ultrasound course will provide mentored hands-on scanning practice with live models in a 3:1 or 2:1 (learner: faculty) ratio as required by the alternative pathway for Society of Hospital Medicine POCUS Certificate of Completion. During the two day course we will go over: Basic Principles of Ultrasonography, Knobology, Thoracic Ultrasonography, Cardiac Ultrasonography, Abdominal Ultrasonography, and Vascular Ultrasonography.

Breakfast, Lunch, Coffee, and Water will be provided to all registrants.

Objectives
  1. Basic Principles & Knobology: Describe the basic physical principles by which ultrasound images are acquired. Explain the features such as gain and depth and how to optimize images. Describe how US artifacts are produced and how to interpret them.
  2. Thoracic Ultrasonography: Describe basic lung and pleura ultrasound terminologies. Identify air artifacts suggestive of the normal and abnormal aeration pattern. Recognize characteristics of alveolar interstitial pattern and consolidation. Identify pleural effusion and anatomic boundaries. Generate an algorithmic approach to dyspnea.
  3. Cardiac Ultrasonography: Describe how to obtain the five basic cardiac views. Perform a qualitative assessment of LV and RV function. Evaluate the inferior vena cava (IVC) describing its role in volume status. Generate an algorithmic approach to hypotension.
  4. Abdominal Ultrasonography: Identify ascitic fluid and identify a safe space for paracentesis. Practice paracentesis and develop a successful approach to the US assisted paracentesis
  5. Vascular Ultrasonography: Discuss common techniques for sonographic needle guidance for vascular access. Demonstrate sonographic needle guidance for vascular access.
