Course Overview

The goal of this CME activity is to provide physicians education on how to identify and treat CHF and COPD in a primary care setting, including recognizing when to refer patients for specialty care.


Objectives

This CME activity will educate physicians on how to identify and treat congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a primary care setting, including recognizing when to refer patients to specialty care. Mount Sinai Health System cardiologist Dr. Sean Pinney and Mount Sinai Health System pulmonologist Dr. Stacey-Ann Brown will share their expertise and best practices for the treatment of CHF and COPD, respectively.


  1. CHF: Identify components of the history and physical exam most suggestive of heart failure
  2. CHF: Identify evidence-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment for heart failure
  3. CHF: Recognize appropriate situations to refer a patient to a heart failure specialist or cardiologist
  4. COPD: Describe the common presenting symptoms and appropriate initial evaluation in COPD
  5. Identify the various classes of inhaled COPD therapies and prioritize their use in primary care.
  6. Determine when referral to specialty care and advanced therapies should be considered in COPD.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
