Ira A. Parness, MD holds the Richard J. Golinko Endowed Professorship and is Emeritus Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Parness received his B.A. magna cum laude from Touro College in N.Y. in 1975 and his M.D. cum laude from S.U.N.Y. - Downstate College of Medicine in 1979. After performing his pediatric (and chief) residency at Brookdale Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y (1979-82), Dr. Parness completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School in 1985. He was then appointed as a Cardiology Attending at Children's Hospital Boston from 1985-1992, with a major focus in the Echocardiography Laboratory.  Dr. Parness also served as Children's Hospital Boston’s first Medical Director of Pediatric Heart Transplantation from 1985-1992.


Recruited to New York City’s Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1992 as Director of Pediatric Echocardiography, Associate Division Director and co-director of Mount Sinai’s Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program (through March, 2012), Dr. Parness was appointed Chief of the Pediatric Cardiology Division from 1997-2019 where he continues full time as emeritus chief. Dr. Parness has special expertise in complex congenital heart defects and surgical planning for their correction; the diagnosis and management of congenital coronary artery anomalies; and, clinical management of acquired pediatric cardiac disease. Dr. Parness is an authority in fetal echocardiography and perinatal cardiology  An author/co-author of over 90 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, review articles and an innovative congenital heart defect echocardiography video teaching collection, Dr. Parness has received numerous awards, including the American Society of Echocardiography’s (2006, inaugural) Excellence in Teaching Award.  Dr. Parness is a frequently invited lecturer at national and international meetings. Dr. Parness’ trainees over the past 3 decades cite his enormous influence, many of whom serve as highly accomplished experts and academic leaders in their own right. Dr. Parness is a highly sought after clinical pediatric cardiologist – a “cardiologist’s cardiologist” - who is consistently “5-star” rated by patients.  Dr. Parness has been named to nearly every annual or bi-annual list of Best Doctors” including: NY magazine’s Best Doctors; Castle-Connolly’s NY Metro Region’s Top Doctors; Castle-Connolly’s Top Doctors in America; Consumer’s Research Council’s Guide to America’s Top Pediatricians; New York Times Magazine’s Super Doctors”; and, various Marquis “Who’s Who” publications.
