Course Overview

This full-day annual symposium provides clinicians in the tri-state community with a comprehensive update of treatment approaches to the diagnosis and management of movement disorders. A broad spectrum of diseases including Parkinson disease (motor and non-motor symptoms, including cognitive and psychiatric), atypical parkinsonian conditions, tremor, dystonia, and chorea will be addressed. Through video review, didactic lecture, and interactive discussions with expert clinicians, attendees will learn about current medical and cutting-edge diagnostic and management options including local injections of botulinum toxin and deep brain stimulation (DBS).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this CME course the participant should be able to:

  1. Recognize the clinical presentations (abnormal movements) that characterize movement disorders.
  2. Recognize the clinical syndrome of dystonia, list current treatment approaches including local injections of botulinum toxin and deep brain stimulation (DBS), and discuss genetic testing and its implications.
  3. Describe an appropriate movement disorder candidate for DBS (deep brain stimulation) surgical intervention.
  4. Devise an appropriate management strategy for the patient with advancing Parkinson disease, including management of cognitive, psychiatric, and other non-motor symptoms.
  5. Describe the assessment and management strategy for a patient with chorea.
  6. Discuss the clinical diagnostic criteria for atypical parkinsonian disorders and current treatment options.
  7. Differentiate between the various types of tremor seen in patients with Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.
